In preparation for writing the next book in my Amish Mysteries, I’ve been spending some time in Lancaster County. I love having the opportunity to ride around the countryside, snap pictures, and learn new facts. Some of the things I’ve learned will find their way into the main plots of my books. Some, will help authenticate the backdrop for my characters.
If you’re on Facebook, you probably know I share pictures and tidbits from time to time with my readers. But, in the event that you’re not, here is a picture/tidbit I thought you might enjoy.
I took this picture of an Amish-owned business that repairs farm equipment. If you look to the right of the main building, you’ll see a small brown outbuilding with a window. That’s the “phone” booth. It’s kept outside the business so as not to distract, but it’s there when a business reason arises. Inside the booth is a small desk and chair, along with the phone.
Also…do you see the “scooter bike?” It’s a widely used mode of transportation for many Amish. Interestingly enough, actual “bikes” are not allowed. The thinking behind that is it might allow them to go too far from home and they like to keep everyone close.
I’ll be back with a new picture/tidbit next week!
